BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Highway 178 through the Kern Canyon was finally opened in both directions at 11:15 a.m. Monday after a truck went over the side of the canyon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
It happened about 7:30 a.m. near the mouth of the canyon on the Bakersfield side. The CHP reported that the driver was pinned inside the Ace Hardware truck but was rescued and taken to the hospital. Their updated information listed that patient to have sustained major injuries.
Crews cleared the eastbound lane for slow moving traffic at first, and then they were able to open the westbound lane at 11:15 a.m. after completely clearing the scene.
