Immigration activists hold another rally in Bakersfield to push for immigration reform bill

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Immigration reform activists from across California were in Kern County Thursday afternoon for a rally outside Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s office in Southwest Bakersfield.

Advocates want Congressman McCarthy to lead the way in their fight for a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Activist Dolores Huerta told 23ABC McCarthy’s vote on a comprehensive immigration reform bill is crucial.

“He is an important figure in the Republican Party and his area especially since it’s an agricultural area. There are people out here picking their crops today that need to be helped by this immigration reform bill and this is why we are focusing on him,” said Huerta.

The Senate has already passed a bi-partisan bill but the House of Representatives have not.

Thursday’s rally was held one day after a private meeting in Washington D.C. where Republican leaders in the House of Representatives decided not to support the Senate’s bill.

The rally in Bakersfield was organized by the Kern Coalition for Citizenship.
