BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Community leaders gathered to push for local lawmakers to vote in favor of immigration reform.
Dolores Huerta was one of several speakers at the rally which started at 10 a.m., off of Empire Drive and Truxtun Avenue.
The group were urging Congressman Kevin McCarthy to vote in favor of 'Fair and Just Immigration Reform.'
People from all over the state are expected to join the Kern Coalition for citizenship in asking the lawmaker to support change.
McCarthy released this statement regarding the topic:
“We are a nation of immigrants, but also a nation of laws. You have to consider both principles when addressing our broken immigration system. Throughout history, our country has been made better by the contributions of immigrants. We must secure our borders as a first step in developing a long-term, realistic and enforceable solution. Congress will continue to thoroughly review all proposals as we work to restore faith in our immigration system.”
