Internet cafes threatened to cease and desist 'sweepstakes' gambling or face prosecution

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Internet cafes in Kern County were told to cease and desist Monday.

District Attorney Lisa Green said a letter was sent to all Internet cafe owners in the county, advising them to end all gambling activity.

Internet cafes use a loophole in gambling restrictions that allow them to set up "sweepstakes" on cafe-owned computers.

The letter threatens owners with prosecution after March 21.  A judge prohibited the sweepstakes in six cases March 10.
