BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - SWAT teams responded to an incident when an assault suspect refused to surrender to Sheriff's deputies Friday night.
Deputies of the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to Norris Road and Chester Avenue for a report of a fight on Friday at 11:30 p.m.
According to the KSCO, as deputies were responding, a caller reported one of the suspects had fired a gun. When deputies arrived, they discovered evidence that a gun had been fired.
During the fight, a victim had been hit in the head with a cane by an individual identified as Robert Oviedo, 43.
Prior to deputies arriving, Oviedo fled into an apartment in the 100 block of Norris Rd. Deputies attempted to make contact with Oviedo but he would not respond, officials said.
The Kern County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, with the assistance of the Bakersfield Police Department SWAT Team, responded to the scene.
A search warrant for the apartment and an arrest warrant for Oviedo were obtained.
After several hours, the Crisis Negotiation Team was able to establish communication with Oviedo. After speaking with Oviedo, he voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident, officials said.
Officials said Oviedo was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, and additional charges are being considered.
Oviedo's bail has not yet been determined.
The firearm in this incident is still outstanding, officials said.
