TEHACHAPI, Calif. - Businesses in Kern County are joining forces to prevent crime.
The Tehachapi Police Department is starting a Business Watch program which is similar to a Neighborhood Watch program.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office will also be a part of the program so businesses around the county will be able to join.
“It’s a way of protecting businesses and the community from crime,” said Teri Cryer, Crime Prevention Officer for the Tehachapi Police Department.
Cryer told 23ABC it's a way for businesses to let the department know if they see something suspicious.
"They want to make a large statement to criminals that they are educated they are aware they know what's going on so we're just heightening that awareness for them,” said Cryer.
The police department will also email businesses crime prevention tips and other important information.
"Communication is a key factor in crime prevention,” explained Cryer.
“It allows us to network and prevent crime because if something happens here we'll tell our fellow business owners near us,” said Anne Marie Novinger, Co-owner of the Apple Shed in Tehachapi.
Novinger said by helping each other, businesses can stay one step ahead of the criminals
“You may not know if someone is out there who will bring you a counterfeit bill so it's helpful to know that ahead of time,” said Novinger.
