The Kern County Superintendent of Schools announced a new safety check regulation for special needs buses, Thursday.
An internal investigation led to the new regulations, after an 8-year-old boy was left on one of the buses for almost 6 hours last week.

Drivers will now have to track when each student gets on and off the bus. "Double-Check" flags have also been ordered which will verify if drivers walk to the back of the bus for a final student check.
Officials said that procedures to check buses were already required, but the policy was not followed in last week's incident.
