BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Kern County Sheriff's Office along with the Bakersfield Police Department delivered 400 Christmas food baskets to families around the county, Thursday.
The departments teamed with with W.A. Thompson Distributors to deliver two large baskets of food to each family.
"It's an opportunity for the officers and the deputies to humanize themselves with the community that we serve," said Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.
The families who received a food basket are referred by deputies and police officers. Many times the officer or deputy who referred the family will personally deliver the baskets to them as well.
"What makes this special is the names of the individuals that come to us..they come to us on call that they have been on," said Greg Williamson, Chief of the Bakersfield Police Department.
The boxes included a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, fruits, canned goods, bread, drinks, and other food items that were donated.
The event is made possible every year through donations from benefit associations, volunteers organizations and businesses owners throughout the county.
