Kern Medical Center CEO fired

Decision made by county supervisors

County supervisors have fired the Kern Medical Center Chief Executive Officer.

The decision to relieve Paul Hensler of his duties came after a closed doors meeting where supervisors discussed years of financial issues that plagued the public hospital.

County officials had learned KMC administrators over budgeted nearly $10 million for the first six months of the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

They also say KMC has racked up about $64 million in budget shortfalls.

The financial problems were discovered by the hospitals Chief Financial Officer Sandra Martin and it was determined they could impact the county's general fund.

Supervisor Mike Maggard says these financial problems forced the board to take action.

The board plans to hold a special meeting to discuss a replacement but no date has been scheduled.
