BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Bakersfield and Kern County leaders welcomed a dignitary to the city and recognized Korean War heroes.
South Korean Ambassador Ahn Ho-Young traveled to Bakersfield to present local Korean war veterans with a special medal at Jastro Park.
The medals are made from the barbed wire that surrounds the Korean demilitarization zone that spans the Korean peninsula.
Ambassador Ho-Young said he respects veterans who fought to restore peace and security in the region.
"We are proud but you must feel equally proud because without your assistance 60 years ago, we would not have achieved what we have achieved over 60 years," Ho-Young said.
Congressman McCarthy honored the veterans as well.
Sixty-nine soldiers from Kern County were lost in the Korean War.
