Last defendant in elder abuse case takes plea deal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The final defendant in the Kern Valley healthcare district elder abuse case has taken a plea deal.

Gwen Hughes pleaded no contest to one charge of elder abuse in court on Thursday morning.

Nine other charges were dismissed.

Hughes is the former director of nursing at Kern Valley Healthcare District.

She and three other employee were arrested back in 2009, charged with administering psychiatric drugs by force, resulting in the deaths of several patients.

Earlier this year former Medical Director Doctor Hoshang Pormir, Former Administrator Pamela Ott, and former pharmacist Debbi Hayes all took plea deals.

Sentencing for Hughes is set for January 9.
