A state lawmaker is trying to make sure groups like the Boy Scouts of America don't get corporate tax breaks.
Senator Ricardo Lara is pushing for a bill to remove tax breaks for youth groups that discriminate based on sex, gender or religion.
Senator Lara says the Boy Scouts of America lifting its ban on gay youth is a step in the right direction but it's not enough.
The organization still bans openly gay adult members or leaders.
"You either accept the person as a whole or you do not. What happens on your 18th birthday when you're a boy scout, you know the organization no longer welcomes you. And it is premised on this ignorance and fear and homophobia that somehow you become a threat when you become a gay adult."
Senator Lara is openly gay and wants to protect youth from discrimination.
