Links for Life will kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness month with their annual "Lace'n it Up" walk, Thursday morning.

Proceeds from the walk and lunch will go to helping local families dealing with Breast Cancer around Kern county.

It's known that 1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but there is more than a 96 percent survival rate if detected early.

"When we have our walk and I see all the walkers I think 'look at all the woman that are going to benefit from you walking', you're going to save a life because you're making a contribution to Links for Life," said Stephanie Lynch, co-chair of Lace'n it Up.

Between 2014 to 2015, Links for Life helped fund a total of 163 mammograms, 385 wig fittings and 303 women attended their support groups.

This year, walker who can't make it to the event can support from social media.

"You can still donate a specific amount, then you send a picture to us and hashtag #linksvirtualwalk2015, so we have people in Colorado and Texas walking," said Jennifer Henry, executive director of Links for Life.

To walk in person, you can join the kick-off ceremony at the Liberty Bell in Downtown Bakersfield starting at 11:45 am or at the Park at Riverwalk at 11:30 am.
