BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
A small business is helping put the City of Bakersfield in the national spotlight this month.
Sweet Surrender is an area bakery that's known for its lemon white chocolate cake and now the delicious dessert is a favorite for Oprah.
Rose Mary Lewis walks four miles three days a week to her favorite place in town.
"Monday, Saturday and Thursday. They do have cookies and candy and cupcakes," she said.
She is among the many customers who call Sweet surrender in Bakersfield her guilty pleasure.
"I don't know where you can go in Bakersfield and get anything better. There isn't any place," said Lewis.
Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine is featuring the bakery and its lemon white chocolate cake, a popular item among customers.
"It’s great for the community, it's obviously great for the business and helps our local economy grow," said David James, a regular customer at the store.
Sweet Surrender began as a tiny chocolate store front back in 1989 and is now a family favorite filled with gifts and bake goods.
“It's exciting to see a little bakery that can do it. She has grown. She was a tiny little chocolate shop and we know got 5,000 square feet of bake goods and women's clothing and gift items and its great. It's a real honor," said Laura Wiener, spokesperson for Sweet Surrender.
The store is celebrating its national fame with an open house where they're demonstrating to the community all the reasons why they’re so popular.
"I think they come back because they can taste the quality. I think people know that there is a little loved baked into everything that comes out of the kitchen and its fun for the whole family," she said.
Owners at Sweet Surrender will be featured in O's April issue out on newsstands now.
