BAKERSFIELD - New Life Community Church in southwest Bakersfield is helping many families have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The congregation is working together to lift the financial burden of putting food on the table.
Londen Johnson looks forward to Thanksgiving ever year.
“Thanksgiving to me means just giving, god gave so, it’s our turn to give and give thanks to him,” she said.
Johnson is a single mom and works hard to provide for her young family and she wouldn’t be able to do it without her mother, grandmother and new life community church.
“Every little bit helps,” she adds.
She is among many people who are getting a special meal this thanksgiving.
“I really can’t believe, it’s a blessing because there are some out there who can’t buy to provide for their families so, them giving is help,” she said.
Although, the congregation helps people, this is the first time church members are assisting a large group in our community.
The church is providing about 100 turkeys, making this thanksgiving a very special one for many area families.
“Life is hard, it’s not easy to be able to sustain a household and have a big thanksgiving or anything like that so people don’t stuff like this to help people out especially people in lower classes can’t afford to do it on their own,” said Nathan Ellis, who is getting a free Turkey.
Families line up and gather their boxes filled with not just the turkey but all the fixings for a good warm meal.
“Many people are out of work and falling on hard times and it’s just very difficult,” said Pastor Dennis Wells with New Life Community Church.
Members of the church spent weeks collecting canned goods and preparing each gift box for this special thanksgiving delivery.
“Our goal is to be a part of this community and let the community know that we are concerned about them and their needs and if they can’t come to the church to get their needs met where can they go?” he said.
