BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Local law enforcement agencies are teaming up with kids on probation to help turn their lives around.
They are taking the kids to the Kern County Raceway Track to give them experience on working on the race cars.
"They have to be maintained every week, race cars are very temperamental, they like to fall apart, and our officers drive them very hard," said John Piker, Kern County Raceway Park Construction Supervisor.
Local law enforcement compete in the first responders race at the track. Participating agencies include Kern County Probation, the Sheriff's department, Bakersfield police, Taft police, Shafter police, Kern County fire and Bakersfield fire.
Officers get to race the cars every week, and they work with the kids to give them mechanical experience on the race cars.
"We get to interact not only with the kids, but with each other, because the agencies are so big we don't know each other, so it's kind of a way to give back to the youth," said Bakersfield Police Officer Craig Trefz.
Not only is the program preparing the 22 kids on probation for a future career, it is also teaching them about responsibility.
"They work on the cars, and somebody's life is in that car, and they realize that," said Piker.
