BAKERSFIELD - The California Highway Patrol says a man stepped off a center median into a crosswalk near the intersection of Monterey and Mt. Vernon.  When he stepped off, he walked right in front of a car.  CHP says the driver swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but ended up clipping him with his left side mirror.  The man was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.  Officers say this accident serves as a reminder that even when you're walking, you have a responsibility to be safe and aware of your surroundings.  This is the second time this week a car hit a pedestrian in that crosswalk.  Last Saturday, a toddler ran out into traffic and into the side of a moving vehicle.
