Local school gets rid of word that undermines certain students

Fruitvale Junior High joins national campaign

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - It's a word you've heard in passing or maybe misused before, but one local school is making sure it's never said on their campus.

As part of the national "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign Fruitvale Junior High students are pledging to ban the word "retarded" from their vocabulary.

It's the third year the school has joined the fight against the slang term but this year will forever standout for one teacher.

Jeanette Lackey lost her special needs son, Ben, last year and in his honor a scholarship fund was setup for students who exemplify a kindness and acceptance towards all peers.

If you would like to donate to the cause you can call Fruitvale School District at 661-589-3830 or for more information on how you can join the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign click HERE.
