Local spelling bee results

Alexander Meyer takes home big prize

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Four local students have a chance to be a national champion after last night's Bakersfield City School District Spelling Bee.

Alexander Meyer of Eissler Elementary School won first place, but the top four finishers get to compete in the county spelling bee in March.

Trinity Shepherd of Stiern Middle School received second place, Ailan Reyes of Frank West Elementary School received third place, and David Stewart from Chipman Junior High School received fourth place.

There were so many participants this year, the district is holding a second spelling bee on Thursday to send four more children to the county finals.

The winner will advance to the National Spelling Bee.
