BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Pope's announcement to step-down at the end of the month has stunned people around the world, as he is the first Pope to resign in nearly 600 years. 

This morning's historic announcement had some Catholics doing a double take when they heard Pope Benedict XVI was stepping down.

There are 24 Perishes around Kern County and this morning's announcement came as a huge shock to people around the world but the people that we talked to in town said they hope this is a chance for change.

Parishioners are worried the 1.2 billion Catholics around the world have some tough times ahead as the church begins the sacred selection process.

The Vatican hopes to have a new Pope before the end of March and Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony of LA may be helping to elect the Pope's successor.

He said in a statement that he looks forward to traveling to Rome to help.
