DELANO, Calif. -
The Grapevine Development is a major retail shopping and entertainment complex approved to be built in Delano. The project is expected to help boost the local economy.
Like many people living in Delano, Jose Nava can't wait to start saving money with the announcement of the new grapevine development.
“I’m pretty excited since we don’t have to drive all the way to Bakersfield to watch a movie. We can just come here and watch it and have a good time,” he said.
The proposed 328,000 square foot community lifestyle center includes a twelve-screen movie theater, and two big large restaurants.
“The population is growing but it’s really improving with the new Walmart and with the new Panda Express, and everything, it’s pretty good,” he said.
“The commercial center will not only meet the retail demand of the city and northern Kern County, it would also create more than 1600 new jobs.
Once complete, the project will be one of the largest commercial centers in the region.
“The last major development in the city was a Safe Mart development almost 35 years ago; so, this is for the first time the next major development,” said Joe Aguirre, Delano City Council Member.
The first phase of the development included Walmart, retail shopping and fast food restaurants. This second phase, not only includes a movie theater and restaurants, but also a grocery store and even more retail shops. Giving residents more reason to shop local.
“This is going to create that environment that people are going to be proud and excited. I don’t have to go anywhere, I can just drive two minutes from here and have a glass of tea with some friends at the strip mall for lack of a better word and enjoy a movie right after that,” he said.
