Man arrested in hate crime against Bakersfield church

Man expected to be in court Friday

Bakersfield, Calif. - Bakersfield Police arrested a man in connection with two hate crimes at a downtown church, Thursday. 

Police arrested James Abernathy, 38, on possibly felony charges of vandalism on a church and hate crime. 

Bakersfield's Cain Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church reported two fires-- one accompanied by racist graffiti-- a week apart.

Abernathy is set to be arraigned, Friday.
