Man fatally shot in Southwest Bakersfield

No arrests made

A man was killed Sunday morning and now deputies are searching for the shooter.

Deputies said that at about 3:15 a.m., they were sent to a home in the 100 block of Griffith Street in southwest Bakersfield.

Deputies said they found 23-year-old Javier Meraz suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his hands and lower torso.

Meraz was taken to Kern Medical Center but was pronounced dead at about 5 a.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed Meraz was involved in a physical altercation at the home on Griffith Street before being shot by assailants.

Witnesses said they saw several men leaving the area in an unknown direction in a vehicle described as a light colored late model vehicle.

It is unknown if this incident is gang related.

This investigation is ongoing.
