Man killed crossing Columbus Street

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Bakersfield police officials said a man was killed while crossing a street in East Bakersfield.

On Sunday, officers with the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a collision in the 1400 block of West Columbus Street.

Officers said they found 68-year-old Darryl P. Smith who had been crossing the street, outside a crosswalk, when he was struck by a 1988 Ford SUV driven by 45-year-old Michael Flores.

Smith was taken to a local hospital where he died.

The driver, Flores, remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation.  He was evaluated, found not to be impaired and was released from the scene.  The investigation is on-going.
