BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
A man was shot at four times for his car keys on Wednesday night.
On Oct.31, at about 11:56 P.M. deputies responded to the area of Ridgedale Street and El Serento Drive in East Bakersfield to the report of a victim of a shooting.
When deputies arrived, they found a 20-year-old Bakersfield man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg.
The victim reported he was returning home from work and stopped his truck in the 5400 block of Le Conte Drive. As he was getting out of his vehicle, a Blue Honda Civic or Accord with extremely loud exhaust, pulled up next to him. The Hispanic male passenger exited the car and displayed a handgun. The suspect demanded the victim's keys. When the victim refused, the suspect shot him in the leg and took the keys.
The victim then started chasing the suspect as he ran away. The suspect fired two more shots at the victim during the chase. The driver of the suspect vehicle drove about a block away and waited for the passenger. As the passenger got into the vehicle, the victim again tried to get his keys back. At that point, a fourth shot was fired. The victim then stopped his attempts to recover his keys and the suspect vehicle sped away.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his wound, which is not considered to be life threatening.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
