LERDO, Calif. - On Sunday at about 8 p.m., detention deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Lerdo Male Minimum Facility were alerted to an inmate down in one of the jail housing units.

Detention deputies said they found 51-year-old inmate Michael Pickering on the floor.

Pickering was taken by ambulance to the Bakersfield Heart Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives were sent to the facility and the investigation is ongoing.

Pickering was arrested by the Kern County Probation Department on February 28, 2013, and booked into the Kern County Jail for a parole violation.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine a manner and cause of death.
