BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -

More than 500 fifth through eighth-grade students from 70 schools will learn from activities designed to help them become effective leaders in school and the community during the 24 th annual Kern County Middle Grades Leadership Conference.

This year’s theme is “Leaders Always TRI,” aptly named for the event’s keynote speaker Sarah Reinertsen who  gained international prominence after making sporting history in one of the world’s toughest endurance events – the Hawaii Ironman.

In 2005, Sarah became the first female to complete this grueling triathlon using a prosthetic limb.

The event will be on Friday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon. at the Bakersfield College Gym at 1801 Panorama Drive.
