More Bakersfield women learning self defense and gun safety while serial rapist still at large
Many safety and defense classes have filled up

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In the midst of the sexual assault investigations in east Bakersfield, many residents remain on high alert, especially woman.
Second Amendment Sports and tells us what woman are doing to better protect themselves.
In order to feel more protected during this time many woman around the city have decided to sign up for hand gun training lessons.
Lately many women like Lisa Dewaal have spent more time at the shooting range. Dewaal, who works at Second Amendment Sports, had never picked up a gun until a few weeks ago, but says with the recent news about a possible serial rapist, she decided to take matter in her own hands.
“It's a little difficult to fall asleep. I mean it's like I have to check all my doors are all locked and everything,” Dewaal said, “It's a little uncomfortable, but just with the basic knowledge that I’ve learned here through the classes that I’ve taken it's definitely helped.”
Defense trainers around the city said she isn't alone. Both Second Amendment Sports and Ol' Boy Sporting Goods have seen more women come into their stores,
“We have definitely seen an increase in woman that are just empowering themselves and saying ‘I’m not going to wait for somebody else to protect me’," said Wayne Marden, gun safety trainer at Ol' Boy Sporting Goods.
Robert Delessio who teaches self-defense classes for women at Second Amendment says unfortunately woman are targeted even more by criminals.
The ladies who attend his classes learn gun safety and other ways to defend themselves, they also receive pepper spray and knife defense.
“Definitely not every situation deserves a solution of a bullet and that’s why in the 8-hour class,” said Delessio.
Women like Dewaal said they feel an ease now that they know how to protect themselves.
