BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Thousands of NASCAR fans flocked to the Kern County Raceway Saturday for the first race in almost eight years.
The last time there was NASCAR level racing in Bakersfield was in October 2005 at the Old Mesa Marin race track. Then in February 2007 ground was broken on the new track and the inaugural race is tonight.
23ABC spoke to some race fans from Bakersfield that used to make regular trips around the country to watch NASCAR races, but now they can watch a race right in their backyard again.
"Huge day. We like to go to Las Vegas and check out the NASCAR races so we are excited about having NASCAR racing back here in Bakersfield," said Lewis Morales and Tommy Buckley.
The next race is scheduled for next week and races will continue through the end of October.
