New business focuses on pet health

Nutritional benefits of high quality pet food

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A new pet food store that specializes in holistic nutrition recently opened for business in southwest Bakersfield.

"Nutrition is a huge factor these days in your pets overall well-being. Nutrition is probably one of the most important things you can give to them," said Travis Thurman D.V.M. of Thurman Veterinary Center.

Many pet owners wonder if organic or high-quality pet food is worth the extra cost. They question the actual health benefits, while other pet owners swear by it.

"I picked organic food because my dogs are healthier, their bones are stronger, and I believe they live longer," said Jan Fogle, pet owner.

"I'm very conscientious about what I put in my body, and I'm extremely diligent about what I give to my pet, because she is part of my family," said Irene Gonzales, pet owner.

There is growing awareness among animal owners that a good diet can be excellent for their pets health. That is why Village Pet Market decided to meet the need.
The family-owned business is a full-service pet store and sells a variety of products, including organic and non-organic foods.

"We know people are looking for natural organic food. Everyday we get two and three customers looking to change foods to a healthier diet," said Suzanne Tasos, owner of Village Pet Market.

The location Tasos chose for the store was no mistake. Her business is nestled between Trader Joe's and Cones Health Foods stores. They figure those customers who shop there are more conscientious about what they put in their body and may also be concerned for their pet's health too.

Animal health experts said not all pet food is created equal. The best dog food is high in protein and low in fillers. Poor-quality dog foods have fillers such as corn, which can be highly indigestible. Organic foods contain no GMOs, which has been shown to reduce food allergies.

Those experts say a high-quality food may cost a bit more upfront, but say it may save you in the long run.

"Put the best products you possibly can into your animals. We are all trying to eat healthier, and high-quality pet foods are by far one of the best ways to keep your pet healthy," said Thurman.

Village Pet Market is located at 8200 Stockdale Hwy and will celebrate their official grand opening on Saturday.
