DELANO, Calif. -
Leaders in the City of Delano are hoping to improve their unemployment numbers as retail giant, Walmart and other stores move in.
It's all part of the Delano Market Place construction project which is expected to create about one thousand new jobs.
Yessica Rodriguez can't explain her happiness.
“No words. Just look at my smile,” she said.
Rodriguez who is a mother of three and looking for extra income is applying to work at Walmart which is being built at the new Delano Market Place.
"I'm also a student so, most of us students work in the fields for that job that we need because not a lot of jobs work with us because of our work schedule," she said.
Walmart officials are looking to fill hundreds of full-time and part-time positions improving Delano's 37 percent unemployment rate.
"This community here has been challenged because of the past recession and the unemployment is astronomical for such a small community," said Mayor Joe Aguirre.
Although Walmart is seeking workers for its new Delano location, it’s not the only business hiring.
"Growth is great for any city and in Delano, it's long overdue," said Janet Rabanal, executive director of the Delano Chamber of Commerce.
Retail store Ross as well as restaurant chains like McDonald's and Panda Express are expected to also be built at the market place.
"Every job that comes into our community is important because we want our residents to afford to live here and right now it's very economical to live in Delano. It's a great community for Bakersfield and with the jobs coming in it makes it better for residents of the city,” she said.
City leaders say the doors to this new Walmart are expected to open in August.
