New Logo to Usher in Centennial Celebration at Bakersfield College

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In 2013, Bakersfield College is celebrating 100 years of higher education in the community. In recognition of this longstanding commitment to the Bakersfield area, Bakersfield College is holding a series of events to celebrate the achievement.

Starting the celebration is the announcement of a centennial logo for Bakersfield College. In December, the college announced a community-wide competition for the design of the centennial logo, which will be emblazoned upon all centennial events and Bakersfield College commemorative book.

Selected from more than 60 entries by a committee comprised of community members, and Bakersfield College faculty and staff, the logo for the centennial embodies respect for the past and vision for the future.

The Bakersfield College Centennial logo was designed by Keith Brandon, a 2005 Bakersfield College graduate who went on to graduated, with honors, from California State University, Northridge. Brandon is currently employed as a graphic artist for The Marcom Group, a Bakersfield-based marketing and advertising firm. For his winning entry, Brandon will receive a $1,000 prize, and the honor of designing Bakersfield College’s Centennial logo.

“The logo took a bolder, modern approach [to traditional centennial design],” said Brandon. “The end result is a contemporary logo that I, as a BC alum, am honored will promote the college’s centennial.”

The Bakersfield College Centennial logo was selected following an open call for submissions which saw the college receiving more than 60 entries. Committee chair Amber Chiang says Brandon’s logo was selected because it boldly represents Bakersfield College’s iconic knight image.

“Our committee saw this logo and felt it was the most appropriate for our centennial,” said Chiang, who is responsible for overseeing Bakersfield College’s brand identity and chair of the Bakersfield College Centennial. “This logo represents respect for the history of Bakersfield College and vision for the future.”

Bakersfield College’s Centennial logo will make its debut at the Bakersfield College Garden Fest on April 20, 2013, and will be in use through the 2014 commencement. The full schedule of Centennial events, along with Centennial news and information, will be posted on Bakersfield College’s website at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu.
