BPD: Man who tried lighting woman on fire at gas station is killed by officer

Officer put on paid adiminstrative leave

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A man at a gas station at 2140 E. Brundage Lane near Mt. Vernon Avenue was seen acting crazy around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Sergeant Joe Grubbs from the Bakersfield Police Department.

A lady was at the gas station pumping gas when the man pulled the gas nozzle out from her car and put gas on her. Sgt. Grubbs said he then tried to light her on fire.

Witnesses said that the man had been at the gas station for several hours before police were called. Witnesses also said the man was acting erratically by throwing outdoor furniture, striking a nearby fence with a metal object and yelling obscenities and screaming.

Sgt. Grubbs said after that the man went over to the woman's car that her young children were in and she was outside of pumping gas. Witnesses said the suspect removed the gas nozzle from the fuel filler on the woman’s vehicle and poured gasoline on the ground and on the woman’s pants and attempted to ignite the gasoline with a lighter.

When Bakersfield police Officer Aaron Stringer arrived he noticed the man had something in his hand. Witnesses described it as either a u-shaped bicycle lock or a black metal object. Officer Stringer asked the man to drop it but he didn't and the officer then fired one shot at him and hit the suspect, Sgt. Grubbs said.
