BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Fire Department confirmed Tuesday that the two men on Fairfax Avenue were Bakersfield firefighters inspecting smoke alarms.
The Kern County Fire Department warned residents Friday of two men saying they were firefighters and requesting to enter homes along Fairfax Avenue, outside the city of Bakersfield.

KCFD officials said they had no units in the area, but they believe they may have been Bakersfield firefighters who were in county jurisdiction.
In an effort to insure smoke detector compliance in multiple-family dwellings, Bakersfield firefighters were conducting the inspections, in full BFD uniforms and with a red BFD fire engine, BFD officials said.
City firefighters have been conducting safety inspections in the apartment complex in question for many years, although in an area technically outside of BFD responsibility, BFD officials said.
BFD officials said the confusion started because Arson and Prevention Investigators were not initially contacted about the issue, and were unable to relay accurate information to concerned parties before it was released.
BFD firefighters are always in full uniform, with official identification including photo I.D. and badges, and are most happy to confirm their official identities when requested, BFD officials said.
Residents are always welcome to contact Bakersfield FIRE Department Headquarters @ 661-326-3911 directly, or visit city-wide BFD Fire Stations whenever they have questions or concerns regarding BFD operations.
According to KCFD officials, dispatch received a call from a resident Friday afternoon about two men wearing blue uniforms with badges asking to check the smoke detectors inside their home.
The resident let the two men in, allowed them to inspect the home and then the men left the house.
Fire dispatchers received reports that the same two men attempted entry for an “inspection” into another home in the area but neighbors became suspicious and called 911.
The Kern County Firefighters and Bakersfield Firefighters can be identified by an official fire department identification card with their picture and department contact information and a uniform with official badge.
If someone is attempting entry into your property without permission, immediately dial 911 and do not let them into your home.
