Officials: Possible pipe bomb discovered in east Bakersfield canal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Police Department received a call of a suspicious object inside the empty canal at Lake and Owens streets at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to BPD officials.
A passerby observed the object and believed it was possibly an explosive device, officials said.
The Bakersfield Police Department Bomb Squad responded and rendered the object safe. The item had the appearance of a pipe bomb; however, its contents are still unknown, officials said.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
