Officials warn the public of telephone scam in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A new phone scam is targeting residents of Kern County by pretending to be a member of the Superior Court Jury Department, according to the county officials.

The supposed scammer targets random locals and asks them to pay fines for failing to report for Jury Duty. If victims refuse the scammer threatens them with arrest for failure to report and even claims they will be arrested on-site if they go to the Jury Office.

After all this, the scammer gives instructions on how to get a pre-paid card from CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart and submit it to a certain account number for payment along with other personal information.

If you received this call, do not give out any of your information. In fact, officials ask that you try to get the scammer's own information such as location, name and phone number.

You should contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111 if you receive this call.
