Olympian injured by excavation accident tells Bakersfield audience to check before digging

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - An Olympian told Bakersfield residents and businesses the importance of checking areas before digging or excavating Friday morning.

Olympic kayaker Cliff Meidl shared his story of severe electrical burns, near hearing loss, and near loss of his legs in an excavation accident.

USA North 811 held a free safety breakfast at Hodel's Country Dining to ask people to call 811 before digging jobs.

The 811 hotline is a free service to obtain important information on what utilities exist beneath the excavation area. It is available to homeowners, excavators and professional contractors who plan to dig, grade, excavate or drill. In many cases, it is required by law to call 811 before digging.
