One dead in two-car crash east of Bakersfield

Alcohol believed to be a factor in crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - One person has been killed in a two-car crash on a rural road east of Bakersfield.

The accident happened at 4:19 a.m. on Comanche Drive, just north of Breckenridge Road.

According to California Highway Patrol Ofc. Robert Rodriguez, a wrong-way driver in a Ford Explorer slammed head-on into a pickup truck. The impact of the crash sheared the cab of the truck completely off the vehicle's frame.

The driver of the pickup, 29-year-old Taylor John Embree, died at the scene. The driver of the Explorer, Gustavo De La Cruz, 35, suffered a broken leg and was taken to a local hospital with major injuries.

De La Cruz will be arrested once released from the hospital, officials with the CHP said.

According to Rodriguez, alcohol played a role in the crash. Empty beer cans could be seen at the crash site.
