BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UPDATE: Wells is booked with no bail and is set to appear in court on Tuesday
One infant is in the hospital after suffering third-degree burns, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
The BPD says that on Friday, August 8, at around 3:16 p.m., the Bakersfield Fire Department was assisted by BPD officers in regards to a call about a one-year-old suffering from burns caused by scalding water.
The BPD and the BFD determined the infant sustained third-degree burns from the waist down.
Following an investigation, the BPD found out that both 23-year-old Thomas Merritt and 22-year-old Lynesha Wells of Bakersfield were babysitting the one-year-old. According to the BPD, both Merritt and Wells put the baby in the bathtub and turned on the water, then left the baby unattended.
The infant was taken to San Joaquin Hospital's Grossman Burn Unit and later transported to the Fresno Burn Center for treatment.
Both Merritt and Wells were taken into custody and booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of felony child abuse and felony child abuse causing great bodily injury.
Two additional children who were at the home at the time were taken into protective custody.
If you have any information that could help the BPD, you are asked to call Detective Rex Davenport at (661) 326-3559 or the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
