BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A pedestrian died in an early morning collision just south of Bakersfield.
The crash happened at about 5 a.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of Di Giorgio Road & Cottonwood Road.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Robert Rodriguez, 56-year-old Juan J. Martinez was wearing dark clothing and walking in traffic lanes when he was struck by a silver Ford Thunderbird. The driver of the car tried to swerve out of the man's path, but couldn't avoid the victim in time.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Rodriguez, the driver of the car will not be cited.
The intersection was closed while officers investigated the scene for several hours.
