Police: Man weilding machete hurts family, dog

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Police arrested a man in southeast Bakersfield Tuesday after officers said he brandished a machete.

Augustin Patino, 23, was arrest after a standoff on the 300 block of Lotus Lane at about 9:24 a.m., officials said.

Sgt. Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department said Patino was attacking family members with a machete inside his home.

Patino exited the home, where he met police officers. Officers helped family members leave the home through the back.

Officers used a taser and a pepper ball gun to try and take him into custody. The non-lethal means were ineffective, officials said.

Police said Patino attacked a small dog in the yard.

Patino threw the machete, at which point officers deployed a K9 unit. Patino was taken into custody, officials said.

Patino was taken to the hospital with minor dog bite injuries. He will be booked and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault of a peace officer, brandishing a weapon, and willful cruelty to an animal.
