The Bakersfield Police Department informed the community of a possible mountain lion sighting in Bakersfield on Monday, but now the sighting has been confirmed as a bobcat.
The confirmation comes from Kern County Wildlife Biologist Vicky Monroe.
A person posted on a social media site a photograph indicating that the picture was taken at 9:30 am on Friday, April 18, 2014, at “River Run between Stockdale Hwy. and Allen Rd.”
"Upon close examination by myself and other experts within the department, we determined it was actually a bobcat," said Monroe.
State wildlife experts say a bobcat is much less dangerous to humans than mountain lions, and the drought is part of the reason wildlife is being spotted in the city.
