A group of women and children are walking through Kern County today on a march for humanity.
This evening they will rally in McFarland to protest the opening of a new women's prison there.
They say the state of California and the private company that runs the prison are working together to try to profit off of the women who will be incarcerated there.
The group accuses the state of moving women from out of state prisons and into the private facility in McFarland in order to keep population numbers low enough to meet the federal requirements for overpopulation in California state prisons.
They say most or all of the women who will likely go there should be released.
They say women should be given home detention so they can be with their children.
They will rally at 5 p.m. Thursday at McFarland Park.
23ABC reached out to prison officials but they declined to comment.
