Reading encouraged with book giveaway at Wingland Elementary School

For several weeks, cafe operation and community service leader Covenant Coffee has collected dozens of books from people and organizations around Kern County .

The literary collection was donated to Wingland Elementary School Tuesday, and more than 700 students got a chance to pick out their favorite books for their own personal library.

"A lot of our boys and girls don't necessarily have a library of their own, so anytime we're able to put a book in their hands, we're happy to do so," said Bob Sheldon, Principal of Wingland Elementary School. "Everything they do in life, they need to be able to read, so that's the foundational building block here at school."

Covenant Coffee's goal is to provide every Oildale student with free books.
