WEEDPATCH, Calif. - Kern County sheriff's officials said that one person was shot in the chest and taken to a market in the 124000 block of Weedpatch Highway.

At about 4:30 p.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Lamont Substation were sent to the Ranchito Market.

The caller reported seeing four people carrying another person who was believed to be injured.

Deputies said they found 19-year-old Manuel Garcia of Lamont suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest and groin.

Garcia was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and his condition is stable.

Deputies said Garcia was with another person on the sidewalk in the 12300 block of Weedpatch Hwy south of Lamont when a white car pulled up alongside them and stopped.

The occupants began a conversation with Garcia and when Garcia walked up to the car, he was shot twice.

Garcia was then helped by others to the market.

There is no description of the suspects at this time and the vehicle has only been described as a white car.  It is unknown if the shooting is gang related.  Deputies from the Sheriff’s Gang Suppression Section assisted in the investigation.
