Residents evacuated in Way Fire to Kern Valley High School

Fire burns over 1k acres

WOFFORD HEIGHTS, Calif. - Residents who are west of Jeanette Way are being asked to evacuate and to relocate to Kern Valley High School.

At approximately 3:00 pm today, Monday August 18 the Way Fire was reported. Presently the fire is between 700-800 acres. 

The Way fire is located in Wofford Heights on the North side of Hwy 155 on the Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest. 

Road closures are in effect on Hwy 155 at Sierra Vista, Adams, Mountain View and Rock Haven. Structures are threatened.

The Fire is under unified command with Forest Service, BLM and Kern County.

Recommended evacuations are in effect in Wofford Heights on Bristle Cone, Sycamore, Sireea Vista, Needhem, Llama Lane, Sgt Lane. 

Recommended evacuations in Kernville Burlando Road, Frontier Lane, Plater Road.

Structures are to believed burned-no known number at this time. No injuries have been reported.

The Kern County Fire Department wrote:

Way Fire has grown to approximately 800 acres and still spreading. KCFD have approximately 80 firefighters on scene with many more from both BLM and USFS. Support is also on scene from air resources and KCFD dozers.  The fire is north of Hwy 155 from Calgary to the south end of Burlando. An unknown number of homes have been damaged or destroyed by the fire, with another 200+ threatened. An evacuation center is being set up at the Kern Valley High School on Erskin Creek Rd, Lake Isabella.
