Riverlakes homeowner shoots a stray pitbull

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A homeowner shot a dog running loose in a northwest Bakersfield neighborhood Monday.

At about 11 a.m., a man drove into his driveway with his brother and his dog.

A pitbull, belonging to a neighbor, approached them in a threatening manner.

The homeowner went into his home to retrieve his firearm, and fired up to six shots at the animal.

The pitbull was hit, but ran away.

Bakersfield police followed the blood trail for nearly a block, but were not able to find the dog.

Police said the gun was registered to the owner and no charges will be filed.
