TAFT, Calif. - The local teacher credited with helping talk down the gunman during the Taft school shooting is being nominated for an award.

Taft High School science teacher Ryan Heber has been nominated by his peers to represent the school in the Kern County Teacher of the Year competition.

That's according to the Californian.

Heber was grazed in the head by a pellet during the January 10, shooting.

If Heber wins he will move onto the state finals for Teacher of the Year.
