A dangerous game known as the salt and ice challenge is becoming popular amongst children in one Bakersfield neighborhood.
23ABC was contacted by a mother who said she found multiple children in her home with serious burns on their arms last week.
The children, who are between the ages of 8 to 10 years old, admitted to the woman that they had attempted the salt and ice challenge.
“I was surprised. I mean you see all these things but you never think it would happen in your own home,” said Lydia Gonzales, the mother of one of the boys who attempted the challenge.
The salt and ice challenge has become popular on YouTube. You can find dozens of videos of people holding a piece of ice over a layer of salt on their skin.
Since the salt allows the ice to become colder, once the ice is rubbed on the skin a person can suffer anywhere from frostbite to second-degree burns.
“It felt like a needle going through my skin,” said 9-year-old Arenna who now suffers with a burn on her arm from attempting the challenge.
According to the kids, they found the challenge on YouTube and decided to try it out.
“On a scale from 1 to 10 the pain was like an 8,” said 10-year-old Anthony, who also tried the dangerous game.
The children were taken to the hospital but none sustained major burns.
Brock Caffee with the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic explains that the burns could have been much more serious and advises parents to monitor their children's social media activity.
“The method of injury is as important as knowing the context in which it comes up,” Caffee said. “Maybe YouTube isn’t the best idea for an 8-year-old.”
