WASCO, Calif. - Officials with the Kern County Sheriff's Department said that it has received two reports of potential shootings near Wasco High School and Palm Elementary School.
Sheriff spokesman Ray Pruitt told 23ABC that the department received a call from the principal at Wasco High School, reporting that the school had received information from parents that there was a Facebook posting indicating that there was possibly going to be a shooting in the area of WHS.
Pruitt said the department dispatched deputies to the high school and investigated the complaint. Pruitt said they weren't able to confirm the posting and said all of the information the department received was from a third-hand person.
Pruitt said they will have a deputy assigned to the campus and extra patrols in the area for the rest of the day.
Pruitt told 23ABC that the department also received a call Monday morning regarding a rumor that there was going to be a retaliation shooting for a previous homicide that occurred in the last several weeks.
The rumor indicated that there was going to be a shooting possibly in the area of Palm Avenue Elementary School.
The elementary school was placed on lockdown, but has since been lifted. A deputy has been assigned to the school and extra patrols around the school as well.
"We don't know if they're related or not, on the surface it doesn't appear they are," Pruitt said. "It appears they're separate incidents, but it's certainly something we'll look into."
Deputies were assigned to each campus for the remainder of the school day and patrols in the area were also increased.
